In April 2018, government scientists were flying over a remote area of British Columbia’s Wells Gray Provincial Park, doing a routine mountain caribou count, when they spotted something remarkable. It was a massive hole in the ground, about the size of a football or soccer field. They nicknamed it Sarlacc’s Pit, because the crater reminded them of the lair of the Sarlacc, a fictitious monster in the movie Return of the Jedi.
